Amazon's Elderly Bedside Armrest Recalled, May Get Stuck and Cause People to Suffer

If there are elders using bedside handrails at home, you can first check what brand it is. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of approximately 200 Xalirium adult portable bedside armrests. This product has been sold on Amazon before.

CPSC states that when the armrest is installed next to the bed, the user may get stuck in the opening of the armrest or between the armrest and the mattress, posing a serious risk of entrapment and suffocation. The product itself does not meet the requirements for structural stability and fixed straps, and there is also a risk of falling.

The product brand for this recall is Xalirium. It is a white metal frame with a black foam wrapped grip and comes with a black fabric storage bag. The brand name can be found on the product packaging label.

The recalled version does not have a vertical bracket in the armrest opening. The product was sold on Amazon.com from February to August this year for approximately $60. At the time of the CPSC announcement, no reports of injuries had been received yet.

This bedside armrest was originally used to help elders get up or reduce the chance of falling off the bed. But if there is a gap between the armrest and the mattress, the body may slip in and cannot come out on its own, making it very dangerous.

CPSC pointed out that this batch of products does not meet the mandatory safety standards for adult portable bedside armrests, including requirements for confined space, structural stability, and straps, and lacks the prescribed hazard warning signs.
