History The predecessor of the French Ministry of Justice can be traced back to the 16th century. In 1551, King Henry II of France established the position of 'Keeper of the Seals' (Garde des Sceaux), responsible for safeguarding the King's seals and supervising judicial affairs; this is regarded as the earliest prototype of the French Ministry of Justice.
