People in Milan's Chinese Street protest with banners: Don't treat the city like a game of 'Monopoly'!
A group of protesters suddenly arrived on Paolo Sarpi Street, a bustling area of Chinese Street in Milan, Italy. Several social centers and student groups gathered together and staged a sudden protest. They are mainly fighting for a community called 'Spin Time' in Rome. That community is facing the danger of being forcibly evicted. On Saturday (September 19th), Rome will hold a national parade, so they shouted in Milan in advance.
This group of people went directly to a construction site in the prime location of Huaren Street. That belongs to an asset management company called 'Investire Sgr'. This company is also the property owner of the building in the "Spin Time" community in Rome. The city government of Rome had always wanted to buy this building. Protesters hung a large banner at the scene, which read: 'Keep your hands clean and spare Spin Time!'! ”
Why did you come to protest on Chinese Street? The protest group said they must speak up and firmly oppose those who treat the city as a chessboard for 'millionaires'. In their eyes, anything can be bought and sold. In the end, they made enough money, but the people who actually lived here didn't even have a place to live.
The protest group also said that 'Spin Time' is not just an old building that has been reoccupied. It tells everyone that besides letting houses rot or being used by private capital to make money, there are other paths for urban development. Over the years, it has sheltered hundreds of people from wind and rain, and also organized many cultural activities that everyone can participate in. In this city full of large-scale events, short-term rental housing, and shopping malls, it has built a living community with human touch and mutual help.
