Investigation underway after female student dies in car falling off cliff in Santa Cruz, California

A fatal car crash occurred on West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, California, in the early morning of the 13th. A car carrying a man and a woman went off a cliff near the famous surf spot Steamer Lane and plunged into the sea. The woman was rescued and taken to a hospital but later died. On the 14th, UC Santa Cruz confirmed that the deceased was a student at the university. Her identity has not yet been released, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation by police.

The accident occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. on the 13th. According to the Santa Cruz Fire Department, the vehicle went off the cliff beside West Cliff Drive and fell into the sea. There were two people in the car at the time: a male driver and a female passenger.

The fire department stated that the first trapped person managed to get out of the car on his own and sustained only minor injuries. The second trapped person was extracted from the vehicle by rescue personnel. Paramedics immediately performed first aid, and she was transported by an AMR ambulance to a nearby medical facility, with resuscitation efforts continuing en route. However, the injured woman was ultimately pronounced dead at the hospital.

UC Santa Cruz subsequently confirmed that the deceased woman was a student at the school. University spokesperson Scott Hernandez-Jason told local media that the university extends its deepest condolences to the student's family and friends and is providing support resources to students and others affected by this tragedy.

As of the morning of the 14th, neither the university nor law enforcement had released the name of the deceased. Santa Cruz police said the case remains under active investigation, with investigators working to determine why the vehicle left the roadway and went off the cliff, as well as the circumstances leading up to the incident.

The accident site, Steamer Lane, is located on the west coast of Santa Cruz. It is a well-known surfing spot and a popular destination for residents and tourists who often walk and watch the waves. West Cliff Drive extends along the Pacific coast, with many sections close to the cliff edge. The accident occurred late at night, and the vehicle plunged directly into the sea, making rescue efforts more difficult.

Police have not yet stated whether speed, alcohol, or other factors were involved. The exact cause of the accident awaits further investigation.
